What sports do you participate in?

Rugby Union, Rugby 7s, Rugby League, Oz tag, Touch Football

What has been your greatest sporting achievement?

My overall best sporting achievement would be competing at national level at the Australian OzTag championships, but my most memorable sporting moment would be winning a rugby league premiership and captaining as the only girl on the team.

Who is your sporting hero and why do you look up to them?

Jess Sergis, Sam Bremner, Kezie Apps each because I can relate to them and their stories of dedication, commitment and struggle. I have always looked up to Jess Sergis having faced similar experiences of being unable to play past the age of 12 but she has shown me that that is not the end of the line.

What is your most disappointing sporting moment, and how did you get over it?

For someone who has always played such a physical sport i have been very lucky in terms of injuries but my most disappointing moment was being told at the age of 12 that i can no longer play football with the team i have always played with due to being a girl. This was really devastating because the rest of the team was able to continue on playing except for me. This was definitely hard to get over but after reading Jess Sergis’ story I realised that she went through almost the exact same experience but it didn’t stop her from continuing her rugby league career.

What have you learnt about being a part of the John Therry team?

I have not been a part of the John Therry team for that long but something I have realised is that you need to have a go and give it a chance.

What is your favourite pre-competition snack?

I have never really had a pre game snack as my game times usually vary a lot but it will usually depend on whether i am feeling nervous, excited etc.

What is your pump up song before a race/game?

I have never had a pump up song but before a game my teammates will usually try to pump each other up to get ready for the game.

During a normal competitive season, go through your week of training.

Monday- Rugby 7s training (fitness and technique)

Tuesday- (Day off) 5km run of our farm track where i occasionally get chased by the odd horse, cow or fox. (all have happened before)

Wednesday- Rugby 7s and Rugby Union Training

Thursday- (day off) Work

Friday- Rugby 7s Game (usually four games in a night)

Saturday- Rest

Sunday- Rugby Union Game or tournament depending on time of year.

Why do you think sport and physical activity is so important for young people?

Coming from a very competitive person, it is always the best feeling to win especially when playing something you love but it is so important to appreciate the opportunity and the experience rather than getting so hung up on the loss. After many years of putting too much pressure on myself after a loss I have realised that the outcome of the game is not the most important thing and you need to remember to appreciate the experience, opportunity and the chance to be able to play sport and do something you love.

What positive quality has participating in sport helped you develop?

I don’t think i would be as confident as i am today without sport. A lesson I have definitely learned whilst playing sport is that you won't know unless you take a risk and try something new. I took a massive risk when deciding to play rugby league for the first time but it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made which is why if you are contemplating whether to try a new sport it is important to remember that you won’t know unless you try it.

What is the best thing about John Therry carnivals?

Unfortunately i haven’t been to many John Therry carnivals but something i have definitely noticed is the amount of encouragement between all teams.

What are some words of wisdom for younger athletes at John Therry?

You won’t know unless you try it and give it a go.
